Up For It – Tenby, South Wales
In the afternoon of Friday 2/9/94 I went
along with what seemed like all the cars on the
road to Tenby in South Wales to a club called
‘Up For It’.
The drive took me a while from Birmingham, but
it was well worth it, what a really top club,
top people and music.
Unfortunately the club is in the hands of the
receivers, who on face value are happy to take
the money (rent) that this successful night
brings into them.
The place, which has 2 large rooms is only
licensed for 580!! The reason for this is that
the 2nd room is not licensed for music and
dancing! If a license was obtained the capacity
would double and would stop loads of people, who
are also up for it, being repeatedly turned away
from the venue.
The venues Saturday night spot (Tracey & Sharon
and alcohol types) is not doing too well at all,
but the receivers are not prepared to do a whole
lot about it. WAKE UP!
If you give the people what they want – then
they will walk your way – otherwise they will
walk away. Danny Slade – organiser and resident
knows this and provides it every Friday, but
with the reduced capacity he cannot do anything
more about it.
Are the receivers so short sighted? The business
and custom is there, utilise it – or are they
frightened of us getting too big and strong? I
have news for them – we already are and the
scene in Wales is a very large slice of the
overall house scene.
Moan over – on with the review , the place
filled up quite quickly to all estimated
capacity figure yet again! With the right type
of people – who were all on the same happy vibe
with not attitude, this is a positive club for
happy people. The security are right tight and
polite, as are the bar staff, which all adds to
a good night in my book.
In the main room the DJ’s on the night were Rob
Huntley, Danny Slade, Dave Dorrell. Each one had
a tremendous reception when they took to the
decks. They played the very best in uplifting
house and hard house etc. The people loved it
and responded accordingly.
In the second room the Emotion Crew provided the
music via DJ’s Riche, Mike Wells and Delirium.
This room was also kicking all night; with lots
of experimental house being played none the less
well appreciated by the crowd. Throughout the
venue backdrops were provided by Party Tribe and
Pig Creative which were colourful and very
effective. The overall vibe on the night
reflected the music – uplifting and happy –
which gives rise to miles and miles of beaming
smiles.
Everyone I spoke to was having a good time and
had nothing but praise for the organiser, crew
and music policy. A top night was had by myself
and everyone else on the night, even BPM film
crew, who were there to do coverage of the
night, top marks. All in all well worth a drive
of a few hours. Keep up the very good work Danny
and crew, respect from me and thanks to you all
for a very memorable night.
I had proposed to leave Wales after the event,
but due to the fact that the Party Tribe crew
had a piece of land, with owners permission to
use it and had set up for an after hours bash, I
was well up for it.
So off we went on a three quarters of an hour
drive, and what a buzz as far in front as you
could see were red tail lights. All along lanes
up and down hills – it was ace! Just like the
old days.
Cars, vans, taxis and even 3 coach loads full of
people turned up at the sight, it was late, dark
and wet (raining!), but the atmosphere was not
dampened in the least, everyone wanted to party
and party they did.
Party Tribe have been together since the end of
February, they put on free parties anywhere they
can, they ask for a small respect to try and
cover costs, which they never do.
They had the sight well sorted, with a hot and
cold food stand, drinks etc. The weather was a
bitch and rained for most of the time, a simple
marquee had been erected over the decks and
sound system and was rammed with partyers.
Outside in the rain the party carried on, with
everyone oblivious to the rain, everyone was on
a mad buzz, including yours truly, but it had
been a long night/morning, so at 7am I had to
leave, but the party was still in full swing as
I drove off up the fields to try and find my way
home!
I didn’t relish the long drive ahead, but what
the hell, it was all well worth it, again.
Respects to each and everyone who turned up –
over 200 cars, a few coach loads and I counted
at least 6 taxis, motor bikes etc. What time did
you eventually finish?
P.S. No trouble – no bad vibes, only good music
and people having a good time. ‘They’ want this
stopped – do you? You’ve got your vote – use it
– don’t lose it!
